Fickle Palate

Summerhill Star Galaxy White

We’re at Aphrodite’s on 4th Ave in Vancouver. Mostly because they have pie. We’re tasting the Summerhill Star Galaxy, a blend of various white grapes. (Editor’s note: ok, I admit it. We didn’t jot down the grapes at the time, and the list of grapes doesn’t appear on the first page of a Google search.) It’s very aromatic, with a tangy finish.

We order Aphrodite’s three course meal. With entries at $24, a three-course meal at $29 makes sense. It’s like getting free pie! We start with the hummus plate for two. The hummus is amazing. It’s served with a whole clove of roasted garlic. Pity the poor friends we’re off to see. Mind you, they’ll probably have an odour of BC’s finest about them by the time we get there.

The wine mixed well with the food. A nice refreshing tang, with a bit of sweet. It doesn’t compete with the food, it compliments.

My thai eggplant dish smells amazing. Coconut milk and thai spices. The sundried tomato piece on top is bursting with flavour. All of the veggies are perfectly cooked. Tender, not mushy, well seasoned but maintaining an individual character.

Kayla’s mushroom pasta is also delicious. It’s the perfect fuel for her long run tomorrow. Perhaps, though,  it’s not enough carbs. So, on to the pie!

Aphrodite’s is known for their pie, for very good reason. We try the strawberry rhubarb and the raspberry rhubarb. Both are sweet, tangy, and delicious. The crust is flaky, and the “a la mody” is adds a yummy creamy touch.

All in all, an excellent dinner, and a good wine. It was a  delicious organic feast to prepare us for a party at a traditional Kits hippy house.
